STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS
Staph is a type of bacteria
responsible for a multitude of diseases. This organism can
cause disease through tissue invasion or toxin production.
Infections such as cellulitis, sinusitis, abcesses, sepsis,
pneumonia and meningitis are caused by Staphylococcus Aureus.
Most cases of food poisoning are caused by Staph.
MRSA
Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcus Aureus is a type of bacteria that is
resistant to many of our common antibiotics. These
infections are very difficult to treat due to the limited
effective antibiotics available. MRSA used to be a bacteria
that was only found in hospital settings, but in recent
years MRSA has attacked healthy people who have contracted
the bacteria within their communities.
ESCHERICHIA
COLI--(E. COLI)
E. Coli is a normal inhabitant
of the intestines of all animals and humand. E. Coli is the
dominant species found in feces. This bacterium can sperad
due to poor hygiene or by contamination of food. Recently,
outbreaks of E. Coli have emerged due to contaminated
spinach and through undercooked, contaminated ground beef.
BACILLUS
Bacillus is a bacteria found in
air, water and air-borne dust. There are two significant
species. Bacillus Cereus which causes food poisoning of
improper cold storage of food and Bacillus Anthracis which
causes anthrax in sheep, cows and sometimes humans.
STREPTOCOCCUS
Streptococcus is responsible for
a variety of health problems ranging from impetigo to
pneumonia. These infections may be mild or severe. The most
common illnesses are sore throat, respiratory infections and
strept throat.
PSEUDOMONAS
AUREUGINOSA
This bacterium can cause urinary
tract infections, respiratory systemic infections,
dermatitis and soft tissue infections. Pseudomonas is the
most common cause of serious life-threatening wound
infections.
LISTERIA
MONOCYTOGENES
This bacterium can cause serious
and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or
elderly people and persons with a weakened immune system.
Listeria is responsible for infections such as septicemia,
meningitis, encephalitis. It also can cause uterine and
cervical infections in pregnant women which may result in
spontaneous abortion or stillbirth.
CANDIDA
ALBICANS
Candida is a yeast-like fungal
organism that commonly infects the skin. It is responsible
for vaginitis, sepsis and oral thrush.
STACHYBOTRYS CHARTARUM
Over the past 15 years in North
America evidence has accumulated implicating this fungus as
a serious problem in homes and buildings. It has been
identified as one of the main causes of sick building
syndrome.
